Duncan Currie has concentrated on images of the human figure in clay for over fifty years. All of his sculptures, even the most abstract, are done from life which gives the pieces a realism unique to the particular model. The “humour of our imperfection” has been a constant theme in his figures. He has attended art classes at the Banff Centre, Queen’s University, the University of Toronto, the Leeds School of Art, and the Medicine Hat College, but his doctorate degree is in science. After his retirement from the Alberta Research Council, he moved to Vancouver Island where he has been able to create larger sculptures for home and garden.

Duncan’s works may be found in private collections in North America, Europe and Asia. He has had bronzes in the Garden Gallery at The Butchart Garden.

Artist’s Statement

My sculpture is influenced by many things including travel, visits to galleries and the works of the great masters.  I work almost exclusively in clay and enjoy its plasticity and responsiveness.

For me, depicting an object in three dimensions is more natural than painting. Nevertheless, I imagine how the works of great painters would appear in three dimensions.  I enjoy recreating the body beautiful – endearingly misshapen, dissected, flattened, elongated, yet all intact.
